Our mission is connection

Our Mission & Ethos

The Hairy Barista is a sustainable business, built on ethical principles.
Our
connection to the Earth matters to us and we constantly strive to make the most ethical & sustainable choices that we can. All of our suppliers have been carefully selected for their ethical, sustainable, organic & regenerative practices.

We are conscious that coffee shops can generate so much waste & this is what drives us to do all we can to honour our Earth. From the day-to-day functioning of the shop, minimising our waste, recycling as much as possible, upcycling, using electricity most efficiently, our interior design choices during our recent renovation, to the ethical products we choose to serve, we constantly strive to make the most ethical & sustainable choices, despite the challenges and costs involved.

Beyond speciality coffee, high-quality plant-based food & medicinal drinks, we have created an inclusive intentional oasis for hearts to open and connection to flourish.
Come, stimulate your senses, nurture yourself & enjoy the aliveness of our flavours & experiences designed to nourish your mind, body & soul.

Our Story
& Vision

Roee (aka ‘the hairy barista’) is best known for his heart-warming vibe, playfulness, sense of humour and professionalism, as well as his life-long fascination & passion for speciality coffee. His standards are high which you can taste in every coffee that he makes.

Roee began his Barista journey in 2002, making coffee in the fast-paced buzzing coffee scene of Tel-Aviv. Six years later Roee unexpectedly made home in London where he found other like-minded coffee geeks & quickly became known for his dedication, efficiency & expertise as a Barista. Roee’s sense of humour, easy-goingness & endless enthusiasm for coffee kept customers coming back for more.

During Roee’s first year in London, he met Ruth with whom he instantly connected & fell in love with. Ruth had spent years holding spaces & supporting individuals & families during their most vulnerable moments. She’d always been passionate about making a difference & held a vision of one day creating an inclusive nourishing space for connection & community.

Nine years later Roee & Ruth plucked up the courage to follow their dreams & co-create a space where their passions for speciality coffee, high-quality nutritious food, love & protection for the planet, healing music & community could unite. They packed their bags & left London to open their first coffee shop at no.69 high street, Totnes.

When the first ‘Hairy Barista’ opened in 2017, people instantly queued up. While Roee served coffee and captivated his customers with music & high vibes, Ruth held the space & infused the menu with delicious, medicinal smoothies, cold pressed juices & superfood lattes.

Their devoted teamwork created a space that was much more than just a coffee shop: it quickly became a healing space for many and a consistent and deeply loved community hub. The HB became and remains the place to be for great coffee, community & connection.

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

We proudly present our collaboration with ADAMA events

Through our collaboration with ADAMA Events we have expanded from the incognito community hub that our coffee shop has always been, into an unmistakable and spacious home for community gatherings.

ADAMA is our events production company, through which we are hosting live-concerts, transformational workshops, community events and informative talks. It is through these events that we cultivate connection.

We give our stage to exceptional local artists and facilitators, of which Totnes and its surroundings have many, as well as prominent international artists and renowned speakers.

Intentional Accessibility & Access

We want ALL of our community to be able to come here and connect at the coffee shop and at ADAMA Events. We have made the whole of the new shop accessible so that it is inclusive for the community.

We have an Assisted Access Ramp at the front of the shop, the shop is flat inside, there is a wide entrance accessible loo, and there is another ramp to access the outside back garden, which is also fully accessible.

Please
get in touch if you have questions and let us know you’re coming in ahead of time if possible.
